Dr. Chai, Grace Mei Ting is an experimental optoelectronics material physicist, actively working with machine learning for engineering applications; theoretical and experimental physicists across the UK, USA, Europe and Asia on her research projects. Her research interests include health robot, fatigue eyes recognition systems, III-V semiconductor materials, mid-infrared and far-infrared optoelectronics and waveguide designs for biomedical applications.
Dr Chai is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of IET. She joined the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus in 2015 as a lecturer. Currently, she teaches Solid State, Electrical Materials and Fields, Semiconductor Devices and Photonics. She is also an IET Malaysia LN Southern Region representative since year 2018. Prior to joining the University, Dr Chai has more than 10 years of work experience in the industry practising as an engineer and a project manager for Agilent Technologies and Telekom Malaysia, respectively. In 2014, she finished her PhD in Semiconductor Physics at University Teknologi Malaysia.
She is passionate about raising awareness on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) by sharing her technical knowledge and industry working experiences to the underrepresented group. In addition to lecturing and research, she also involves in organizing various STEM programs for high school girls. Her outstanding dedication and accomplishments in developing opportunities to expose underrepresented groups to STEM, specifically the Asian and Dayak women has been recognized by The Optical Society with an honorable Mentions as The OSA Diversity & Inclusion Advocacy in 2018. She has also been shortlisted as one of the finalists for IET Women Achievement Award in year 2018 and IET Malaysia Leadership Award in year 2023.
