We’re delighted to announce that our annual lecture on Thursday 22 February will be given by Shreya Atrey.
The movement for gender equality and women’s human rights in international human rights law began with the struggle for recognition of status, equality and rights, a struggle that continues to be central to the movement even today.
While it is true that the movement has gained ground across international human rights law systems, it is also true that it has not yet reached those most marginalised. Women who are disadvantaged not only by their sex or gender but also because of their race, colour, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, disability, age etc. remain at the bottom of the ladder of gender equality. This is despite the incremental recognition of intersectionality in international human rights law. This state of affairs may be attributed to a rendering of intersectionality in international human rights law which fails to appreciate its prioritarian impulses.
This talk argues that an intersectional approach to gender equality in international human rights law is necessarily prioritarian, drawing attention to those most disadvantaged. It unravels the implications of this approach to gender equality in the interpretation and implementation of state obligations in international human rights law.
Speaker information
Shreya Atrey, is an Associate Professor in International Human Rights Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, and is based at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights. She is an associate member of the Oxford Human Rights Hub, an Official Fellow and Racial Justice and Equality Fellow at Kellogg College, and a Senior Teaching Fellow at New College. Shreya is the Editor of the Human Rights Law Review (OUP). Shreya works on equality and human rights issues in comparative and international law. Her research interests include Human Rights Law, Equality and Discrimination Law, Racism and Anti-racism in Law, Feminist Jurisprudence, Poverty Law, Disability Law, Legal Education and Pedagogy.
