Moby Dick captures the public imagination

Published: 8 October 2012

Creative Writing Fellow Philip Hoare launched Moby Dick Big Read, an international online audio project based on Herman Melville's classic novel.

For the next 135 days, readers including Tilda Swinton, Stephen Fry, and David Cameron will upload a chapter to the Moby Dick Big Read website. The initiative is a collaboration between Philip and artist Angela Cockayne, and will also include 135 new images by contemporary artists that respond to events in the novel. The project has already received coverage in the international press, with articles in the Guardian and the New York Times, and will run until mid-January next year.
