New book by former SCNR PhD student
Dr Roger Hansford, a former PhD student in the Music Department and member of SCNR, has just published his first book with Routledge. Based in part on the work he did for his thesis while studying at Southampton, Figures of the Imagination: Fiction and Song in Britain 1790-1850 surveys romance novels by Ann Radcliffe, Matthew Lewis, Sir Walter Scott, James Hogg, Edward Bulwer and Charles Kingsley in order to examine their intersection with vocal music, and in so doing records a society on the cusp of modernisation, with a printing industry emerging to serve people’s growing appetites for entertainment amidst their changing views of religion and the occult.

The SCNR congratulates Roger on this splendid achievement.
