To China & Back: Professional Circuits through Nineteenth Century China Seminar

This talk will follow Albert Smith, Maquis Chisholm, Chang the Giant, and other performers and clowns as they travelled to and from China and Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century.

What can we learn from these stories and journeys about the encounter between Victorian Britain and Qing China?
