Part of the Humanities 2014-2015 Inaugural Lecture series
'Nietzsche, Nature, Nurture'
Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) – one of the most influential philosophers of the modern period – repeatedly tells us that we must “become who we are”. But this is a puzzling thought. How can we become who we are anyway? And how, if we can become who we are, might we have any sort of say in the matter? This talk attempts to make sense of some of Nietzsche’s remarks about these issues, all of which bear upon the limits of what is possible for us as human beings.
Each of the Inaugural Lectures in Humanities will have an end of lecture collection for the speaker's nominated charity. For this lecture Professor Ridley has chosen to support SCOPE .
This is a free lecture, to attend please book a place via the Online Store , the deadline for booking is 1 December 2014 .
