Event details
Unfortunately, the Ethical Challenges Lecture that was due to take place on Thursday (22 November) has had to be cancelled. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Sir Roger Scruton is no longer able to attend.
The 7th annual Ethical Challenges Lecture. Part of the School of Humanities annual series of lectures.
'Objectivity and Judgments of Taste'
It is a common assumption that aesthetic judgments are judgments of taste and that judgments of taste are subjective, being expressions of personal preferences that have no ground other than themselves. I will argue that aesthetic judgment is essential to a life properly lived, that it is not simply ‘a matter of opinion’, that aesthetic choices matter, and that there is an intrinsic tendency towards consensus among those who take them seriously. I will reflect on some of the disasters that have come about because of the common assumption and argue for an ‘aesthetics of everyday life’ that will be an answer to some of the problems of social fragmentation that we are experiencing today.
This years lecture will be given by Sir Roger Scruton. Roger Scruton is a philosopher, public commentator and author of over 40 books. He has specialised in aesthetics with particular attention to music and architecture. He engages in contemporary political and cultural debates from the standpoint of a conservative thinker and is well known as a powerful polemicist. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a fellow of the British Academy.
This lecture will be chaired by Professor Alex Neill , Vice President (Education).
In association with the Southampton Ethics Centre .
Please note the closing date for booking is 6pm on Friday 16 November.
