Event details

Title: Critical phenomena in gravitational collapse

Abstract: Take a generic one-parameter family of regular initial data for classical
GR (and matter) that contains both "strong" data which form a black hole
and "weak" data that do not. Fine-tune the parameter to the black-hole
threshold. It seems that in this limit the outcome is a naked singularity,
thus qualifying what kind of cosmic censorship we can expect. I will first
review the basics of this, focusing on the case of the spherical scalar
field (where we have the strongest numerical and mathematical evidence),
and then talk about more recent work, going to axisymmetry and vacuum.
