Ludlow Junior School recently approached Winchester School of Art for some ‘inspirational arty young people’ to support an Art Week they were planning. The aim of the Art Week, to be undertaken by children in all year groups at the school, was to produce a mural which was linked to the school’s values: RESPECT, HONESTY, DETERMINATION, PRIDE, PATIENCE, FRIENDSHIP. Each word was to be painted on to hardboard panels using acrylic; written in decorative/graffiti style writing.

This opportunity was advertised through the ‘Student for a Day’ outreach scheme to students at Winchester School of Art. Four students volunteered their creative minds and supported Ludlow Junior School’s event; three undergraduates from Fine Art and Graphic Art programmes and one Fine Art postgraduate student. The ‘Student for a Day’ outreach scheme links art students with schools so that they can gain an insight into the teaching profession and also develop their employability skills; it has been running now for 19 months.

The students were asked to contribute their ideas and provide some sketches to inspire the children prior to the event, and then support small groups of children during the art week. One Graphic Art student taking part had asked if they could trial their final year project with a group of children, which the school agreed to enthusiastically.

Shelley (Curriculum Specialist for Art) from Ludlow Junior school described the artwork produced during the week as ‘absolutely amazing!’ She also reported receiving many lovely comments following the art week and the children are now very excited about their artwork which will be displayed in their playground shortly.
