One paper containing a manuscript copy, in the hand of Jane Austen, of Byron's poem `Napoleon's farewell', c.1815. Byron's poem was first published in The examiner on 30 July 1815 and subsequently appeared in his Poems published in 1816. Jane Austen's version, which is unpublished, differs considerably from Byron's original. The manuscript is described, along with further poetry by or in the hand of Jane Austen, in D.Gilson, `Jane Austen's verses' The book collector 33 (1984) pp. 25-37 and 34 (1985) pp. 384-5, with subsequent discussion by D. Le Faye in The Times Literary Supplement 20 February 1987, p. 185 and 27 April - 3 May 1990, p. 445. It was presented to the University by J.Pierpoint-Morgan in 1925, from the Charles Austen collection.
