Business School prize winners visit offices of 7IM and meet Justin Urquhart-Stewart
Six undergraduate students from Southampton Business School who were shortlisted for the 2015/16 Justin Urquhart Stewart competition visited the offices of 7IM earlier this month as part of their prize.
Sujay Limbu, Leo Imasuen, Mohamed Al-Beity, Darron Porter, Jingmin Chen, Charlie Southwood and Iulia Boariu all wrote a brief for Justin linking current affairs to their studies. They did this for a chance to win a £1000 scholarship for their final year of study. Sujay and Charlie were the eventual winners. Sujay wrote a paper on SMEs and Charlie wrote one entitled “Lie and your business may die”.
During the visit the students were greeted by Justin, who as well as being a University of Southampton alumnus is co-founder of 7IM and a regular on BBC news. Renowned for promoting responsible investment management and encouraging people to educate themselves on personal finance, Justin had also recently given a lecture at the University during which he encouraged people to create a “latte pension”.
I had a fantastic time during the visit to 7IM. We had several interesting talks about the process of investment management, the business model of 7IM and more open talks. Additionally we had the chance to talk about our dissertation topics with people from the industry, providing us with useful and insightful opinions. They also introduced us to a great app called 7imagine which can be used for personal financial planning. What I learnt the most from the talk was the method of ‘scenario analysis’ which helps to manage investment risks. We also discussed 7IM’s investment management strategies while facing the result of the EU referendum.
Students were given a personal tour 7IM’s office by Justin and found out about the ethos of the company. The students also met Chris Darbyshire, Chief Investment Officer at 7IM and Ben Kumar who is an Investment Manager and 7IM’s first graduate hire.
Justin has generously donated this prize for three years in total so Business School students in their second year of study for 2016/17 will have the chance to enter this year. More details about how students can win this prize will be announced soon.
