There is growing demand for graduates with analytical skills who can gain insights from data to solve organisational problems and improve business performance. The MSc in Business Analytics and Management Sciences, one of just a few courses of its kind in the UK, is designed to fulfil this demand. You’ll learn a range of analytical techniques to assess and resolve complex challenges, which you’ll have the opportunity to apply in a professional setting during a three-month business project. The course content is informed by industry input and draws on expertise from one of the UK’s leading centres of research in this area, keeping your learning up to date and ensuring you graduate with the skills employers are looking for.

There is huge demand in private and public sector organisations for graduates with analytics skills who can use data to optimise business and operational functions. This Masters degree, one of just a few of its kind in the UK, will help you to advance your career in this growing area. The course content is informed directly by industry, ensuring the skills you learn are relevant to today’s job market.

This MSc programme is taught in conjunction with the Centre of Operational Research, Management Sciences and Information Systems (CORMSIS). This cross-disciplinary group, which includes academics from Southampton Business School, Mathematics and other related subject areas, is one of the largest of its type in the UK. The link with CORMSIS opens up your choice of modules and means you’ll be taught by leading academics in maths as well as business.

The course is designed for students with a quantitative, but not necessarily highly mathematical background. It will be of interest whether you are looking to specialise following your undergraduate degree, advance in your current role, or change career path.

Programme Structure

This course is offered on a full-time basis over one year, or on a part-time basis over two years. It includes compulsory and optional modules. A highlight of the course is the opportunity to undertake an industry-based summer project, which will inform your dissertation.

The compulsory modules provide a thorough grounding in core concepts and techniques in business analytics and management sciences, such as optimisation, decision modelling, simulation and quantitative methods. They also cover key management topics such as operations, project management and risk.

These modules are designed to develop your quantitative skills and your professional capabilities. For example:

  • The Simulation module covers the main theories and techniques of simulation and will introduce you to a range of widely used commercial software packages.
  • The Visual Basic for Applications module offers a grounding in coding and programming.
  • You’ll learn directly from industry guest tutors as well as academics on the distinctive Consultation Skills module, giving you valuable insights into current practice. Working as part of a group you’ll learn how to develop a consultancy proposal for a real-world business issue.
  • On the Negotiating Skills module you’ll learn about negotiation approaches and try out your skills in small groups, led by an experienced academic who has worked in industrial relations.

Optional modules, which include relevant maths modules, will give you the opportunity to follow your own areas of interest. They cover subjects including credit scoring and data mining, knowledge management, game theory for business, health modelling, credit risk, and forecasting. You could also take Software for Data Analysis and Modelling and learn the fundamentals of SAS programming.

In the last three months of the course there are opportunities to undertake a business-related project, either within the Business School or at one of our summer project partner organisations, which will form the basis of your dissertation. 

Summer project in industry

A special feature of this MSc is the industry-based summer project, which provides an invaluable opportunity to put your knowledge into practice and enhance your professional skills. Working directly with an organisation for three months, you’ll apply analytical or modelling techniques to address a real business challenge. You’ll present the findings to the organisation and write them up for your dissertation.

Over half our students are successful in securing an industry project. Past students have worked with a range of partner organisations including Rolls-Royce, Virgin Media, IBM, Barclaycard, Boeing, Tesco, JP Morgan, Lloyd’s Register, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

We offer a high level of career support before and during your project so that you can get the best out of your placement.

  • During the first two semesters you’ll gain an insight into different sectors, roles and project types at weekly seminars presented by professionals from our industry partners, some of whom are our alumni.
  • Workshops in semester two cover essential skills such as CV writing and interview skills, preparing you for the project application process.
  • Organisations from a range of sectors provide project briefs and students are invited to choose projects of interest and submit their CVs to the relevant companies.
  • Companies come to the Business School to interview students, and successful applicants are allocated a summer project.
  • You’ll receive regular supervision during your project.

Research-led learning

The course benefits from the expertise of leading management science researchers within the Business School, as well as from Mathematical Sciences. You’ll learn from active researchers who bring their up-to-date knowledge to the course

  • Professor Sally Brailsford is an award-winning expert in healthcare modelling, using discrete-event simulation and systems dynamics as modelling tools to improve the way healthcare services are run. She teaches on the Simulation and Credit Scoring and Data Mining modules.
  • Professor Tolga Bektas, who teaches operations management, is an expert in logistics with a focus on sustainability issues. He is involved in numerous research collaborations with industry and academic institutions worldwide.
  • Professor Julia Bennell specialises in optimisation models for logistics, for example cutting and packing, vehicle routing, scheduling and network design. She has undertaken numerous research and consultancy projects with organisations including the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the UK’s air traffic control and tax agencies.
  • Research by programme leader Dr Yue Wu focuses on business challenges such as global supply chain and logistics management, container terminal operation, air cargo forwarding and empty container allocation.

Typical entry requirements

Bachelors degree

2:1 classification UK bachelors degree or equivalent

Acceptable subjects: A wide range of subjects accepted in Business, Economics, Science, Engineering, IT, Management and Marketing, Communication, Education, Political Science, and Sociology

Required module areas: Evidence of quantitative study, eg accounting, economics, finance, maths, management sciences or engineering. Other subjects considered if quantitative ability demonstrated at A levels.

Excluded subjects: English translation, Art/Performing Art, Vocational Studies

Work experience in a related field can compensate for degree subject/grades.

Selection process

The University’s Admissions Policy, available at www.southampton.ac.uk/admissions_policy, applies equally to all programmes of study. These are the typical entry criteria to be used for selecting candidates for admission. The University’s approved equivalencies for the requirements listed will also be acceptable. The entry criteria for our programmes are reviewed annually by the Faculty. Those stated were correct as of July 2015. Applicants should refer to their specific offer conditions on their offer letter.

International applicants

If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate that you have reached a satisfactory standard in an approved English language test.

The following scores are accepted for direct entry:

  • IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.5 in reading and writing, 6.0 in listening and speaking

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

If you have professional experience, or credit through prior learning at another institution, you may be eligible to use this experience against some of the programme requirements for period of study. Typical course content

You may choose Option modules totalling 18.75 ECTS/37.5 CATS.

Within your Option module selection you must choose either MANG6037 Systems Thinking or MANG6049 Problem Structuring.

MANG6095 Dissertation supervision starts in Semester 2 and should be submitted in September.

Students are responsible for meeting the cost of essential textbooks, and of producing such essays, assignments, laboratory reports and dissertations as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for each programme of study.

Printing and copyingIn most cases, written coursework such as essays, projects and dissertations are submitted online and by hard copy. TravelSome modules may include optional visits. You will normally be expected to cover the cost of travel and admission, unless otherwise specified in the module profile.
OtherCandidates may use calculators in the examination room only as specified by the University and as permitted by the rubric of individual examination papers. The University approved models are Casio FX-570 and Casio FX-85GT Plus. These may be purchased from any source and no longer need to carry the University logo.
