Catherine Woods

Catherine Woods graduated from the University of York in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and completed a Masters degree in Social research, also at York in 2011.

Catherine commenced her PhD in July 2012 entitled, "SPEAK: A Conversation Analytic Examination of Cancer Helpline Talk" (supervised by Dr. Geraldine Leydon, University of Southampton; and Prof. Paul Drew, University of York). The PhD will contribute to a programme of research concerned to gain an empirical understanding of how telephone-based care is achieved on a routine basis between parties to helpline calls, and contribute to the wider literature on the meaning of "effective" communication.  Voluntary work as a call-taker prior to PhD commencement provided invaluable ethnographic insights into the helpline environment and the opportunties and constraints of helpline interactions.
