Excellence in Teaching Awards 2014

We are please to announce that Dr David Read has been named faculty winner of the 'Lifetime Achievement Teaching and Learning' award at the Excellence in Teaching Awards 2014 hosted by SUSU.

The 2014 Excellence in Teaching Awards (ETA's) were hosted at the Highfield Campus on Thursday 8th May and we were very proud to say that we had six members of staff nominated from Chemistry.

The ETA's are an annual event hosted by the Students Union at University of Southampton. The ETA's give our student's the opportunity to recognise the support of the staff that teach them and show how that teaching has had a real impact on their academic experience.

The categories for the awards are:

  • Outstanding Lecturer
  • Teaching & Learning Lifetime Achievement
  • Innovative Teaching
  • Best Feedback Provision
  • Contribution to Academic Support

Dr David Read was named faculty winner for 'Lifetime Achievement Teaching and Learning'. He won due to his innovative methods and influence on the department as a whole, driving teaching up standards in Chemistry.

'David's experience as a school teacher has allowed him insight into the whole educational experience. He uses this to constantly stay ahead of innovation, with a large proportion of his ideas being incorporated at other universities. David is constantly involved with driving up teaching standards across the department, from training staff on the use of technology, to ensuring the transition from A-Levels is not a difficult one. David is constantly winning awards from teaching and professional bodies for his excellent work, but we really feel it should be shown that students appreciate his efforts just as much.'

The Excellence in Teaching Awards allows students across the university to highlight, recognise, and celebrate their favourite members of staff.

This is not the first time that Dr Read has been recognised for his teaching. David has previously received a Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award in 2008 for his role in integrating new forms of learning technology in teaching in Chemistry. In 2010, David was the recipient of the RSC's Higher Education Teaching Award and the 'Most effective use of video in an educational context' award from the Association for Learning Technology.
