Academia and industry constantly need to recruit qualified individuals to support and develop innovation activity. Meanwhile there is a pool of talented, qualified and highly-skilled people keen to take on these roles. Many of these are women, including returners and those working outside the high-tech sectors.

This live-streamed events in Southampton will give delegates and on-line viewers the opportunity to hear from women successfully making returning to careers, and to gather information on how to access potential roles in the high-tech sectors such as ICT, Science,Engineering and others enabled by technology.The events will provide information on employment law, part-time and flexible working regulations and practices and work-shadowing opportunities, together with time for group discussions and networking in a relaxed atmosphere.

 'High-tech start up' is a popular phrase these days, but what does starting up your own business look like in real life? What   should  you consider before setting up on your own? What are some different ways of starting your own business? Becky will talk about her  own experiences leaving academia to run her own company and offer some guidance for those thinking about being their own boss.

 Women's career development

 Returners, employers and policy makers continue to grapple with creating an environment where women’s careers are able to remain on track during and following a break to have children. Kathy will draw upon recent research, including her own, to outline key issues affecting returners, and look to provide pointers on how individuals might approach managing their return to work.

Speaker information

Becky Stewart,Codasign ,Becky Stewart is an engineer and developer working with physical computing. Before completing her PhD in acoustics, spatial audio and interfaces for music search with the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary, University of London, she completed an MSc in music technology at the University of York and a BMus in music engineering technology and computer science at the University of Miami. She works on creative technology projects for clients through Anti-Alias Labs and her personal blog documents her projects.

Letitia Baldock,Legal Services, Southampton University

Kathy Cotter,Researcher,Kathy has over several years of executive and board level experience as a human resources professional within leading technology organisations including Cisco Systems and ADC Telecommunications. For the past five years Kathy has been working with individuals undergoing significant personal change in her capacity as a coach, counsellor and psychotherapist. She has recently conducted research into executive coaches’ experience of coaching women during their transition to motherhood, and will be undertaking further research in this area as part of her professional doctorate studies. She holds a Masters in Human Resource Management, a Masters in Life, Business & Executive Coaching, and an Advanced Diploma in Counselling.
