Developing and applying activity programmes and rehabilitation technologies to promote healthy lifestyles

Enabling Lifelong Independent Living

The Active Living research theme aims to enable lifelong active living and healthy ageing through optimising neuro-musculoskeletal health.  We are developing innovative technologies and establishing new clinical practices to maximise the active lifespan, whether people are healthy or living with musculoskeletal, neurological or respiratory conditions. The population is living longer, which presents challenges. The cost of an ageing population, combined with diseases due to inactivity, is a considerable global healthcare challenge.  Evidence-based solutions are needed to increase physical activity and independence in ways that are safe, affordable and sustainable.

To meet these challenges, our Active Living researchers are working internationally across academic and clinical disciplines in partnership with industry, Centre for Sport, Exercise and Osteoarthritis Research Versus ArthritisNIHR ARC Wessex to develop new ways of preventing, diagnosing and managing common conditions, such as stroke and osteoarthritis. A key feature of our work is engaging with patients and the public, so our findings are applied to maximise the impact on patients and the general population.

Our research group focuses on Active Living for Health (led by Stokes; Deputy, Bowen)
