Hi, I'm Alex Rogers and I studied BA History within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

A degree in history gives you an impressive set of skills, which you can apply in any area. After graduating, I hope to work in investment banking... to this end, I have just spent the summer working as an intern in the investment management department of a private bank in London.

Growing up in the Kent countryside, the remnants of past generations have never been far away from me. From an early age, I have always had a curiosity about past generations and I love visiting historic houses, castles and places. So, history at Southampton was the perfect choice for me. The course is fascinating and to top it off, my lecturers are extremely friendly and encourage me to explore the subject area. I am really enjoying my time here and am looking forward to spending the rest of my degree focusing on the recent histories of England, France and Russia.

The best thing about living and studying in Southampton is the amount of opportunities on offer. To begin with, Highfield Campus is right in 'the centre of the action', minutes away from the city's centre as well as its parks. There are a great deal of clubs and societies on offer as well. During the last year, I have really enjoyed being part of the Students' Union radio station: SURGE Radio. I found it incredibly easy to fit into the environment, presenting and producing several shows, and am looking forward to working as Head of Music during my second year.

After graduating, I hope to work in investment banking; an industry I have always found both fascinating and exciting. To this end, I have just spent the summer working as an intern in the investment management department of a private bank in London.

So, my advice for anyone considering studying history at Southampton is to take advantage of everything the University has on offer in its relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere.
