Dr Ainhoa Campas Velasco Appointed to Protection of People at Sea Committee

Published: 6 December 2023

The International Law Association (ILA) has appointed Dr Ainhoa Campas Velasco as a member of its newly established Committee on Protection of People at Sea.

The ILA Committee on Protection of People at Sea will consider the applicability of rules of international law concerned with the protection of people at sea, specifically on the question of jurisdiction, approached in a comprehensive way, without focusing on specific rights or specific groups of people.

Dr Velasco commented: “I am really looking forward to working with all members of the Committee and contributing to its work programme in this significant and pressing legal field. It speaks very closely to my areas of research interest which lie primarily in maritime law, the law of the sea, international human rights law and international refugee law.”

The Committee will work towards advancing knowledge in the field, producing reports, which illustrate the state of the art in this field as well as addressing the current debate, and issuing recommendations that provide guidance to States and other key actors on the scope of their obligations vis-à-vis people at sea. This newly created Committee will allow the ILA to engage with an emerging topic that is attracting more and more attention from scholars and national and international institutions alike and to take a leading role in the development of international law, as has already happened with many other topics addressed by the ILA.
