Event details

What place might the pursuit of imperfection hold in the evolving discipline of classical music? What expressive freedoms might emerge by cultivating the 'grain' of the voice? What pleasures might be found by following sensation over sound? What forms of liberation might appear by creating the space to fail? Juliet Fraser reports on her current inquiries as a singer and as a festival director into such questions.

Speaker information

Soprano Juliet Fraser specialises in the gnarly edges of contemporary classical music. She maintains a busy schedule of international performances as a soloist, regularly performing with ensembles such as Musikfabrik, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Modern and Quatuor Bozzini, and as a duo with pianist Mark Knoop. She is an active commissioner of new repertoire and has worked particularly closely with composers Laurence Crane, Pascale Criton, Bernhard Lang, Cassandra Miller and Rebecca Saunders. She also enjoys writing words about being a performer. Her essays have been presented and published internationally.

Juliet is artistic director of the eavesdropping festival in London and programme director of VOICEBOX, a new programme for advanced singers specialising in contemporary vocal performance. In 2023 she was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music by the University of Southampton, where she was also recently joined the Department of Music as Visiting Fellow.
