Eighteenth century material

Two copies of the will of Philip Salomons, 17 Jun 1780; a birth certificate of Solomon Jacob Levi, 14 Nov 1791; a ketubah of the marriage of Joseph and Hendelah Salomons, 26 Nov 1794; a shetar halitsah, in Hebrew, releasing Judah Philip Salomons from marrying his sister-in-law, Hendelah Salomons, 26 Nov 1794; and the probate will of Joseph Salomons, 10 May 1797.

Nineteenth century material

Wills, marriage certificates and legal documents; literary papers: including a manuscript copy of `Moses Mendelsohn's reply to Lavater', [watermark 1834]; a printed poem `From the high and mighty Caesar to Augusta' by `Wilhelm' and inscribed `My mother's little poem of the German Emperor's views during the Franco-Prussian [war] 1870/1'; manuscript poetry and compositions by Mrs Rachel Waley (n‚e Hort) and eight volumes of verse, translations of poetry and prose by Rachel Hort, dedicated to her brother Abraham, 1808-36; letters of condolence to Mrs Waley on the death of her husband, Simon, 1876, and other correspondence; newspaper cuttings of articles and letters by Simon Waley, 1858-74; obituary notice of Mrs Waley from the Jewish Chronicle, 11 Aug 1899.

Twentieth century material

Papers include appointments of trustees for the will of Cecilia Salomons, 9 Jan 1900, and for the marriage settlement of Captain and Mrs De Saisset, 10 Oct 1904; orders of service for the wedding of Frank Waley and Olga Wilenkin, 1923, for memorial services and services of dedication; concert programmes, table plan of the dinner of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, 1936, and invitation cards to the official opening of the exhibition of Anglo-Jewish art and history, 1956; article on the Levi family of Portsmouth; photographs, including one of Philip S.Waley; letters and papers relating to Isaac Rosenberg. History of the Waley family by Philip S.Waley, together with a history of his wife's family, the Melchior family.
