MS 272 Small collections of nineteenth-century political papers


MS 272/1 Three autograph letters from Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington, to William Holmes, Tory whip (1779-1851), concerning reports in the Morning Post newspaper about Wellington's health, 8, 14, 23 Dec 1838; lithographed manuscript invitation from the Duke of Wellington, with blanks filled in by him, to William Holmes to visit on Tuesday 1 February, n.y. [1842], to meet the King of Prussia, the Duke of Sussex, Princess Augusta and Prince George of Cambridge; copy of a letter from the Duke of Wellington [to Revd Mr Foster `his relation'], made for private circulation, c.Nov 1832.

For the date of the manuscript invitation from Wellington to William Holmes see The letters of Queen Victoria: a selection ... between the years 1837 and 1861 ed. A.C.Benson and Viscount Esher (3 vols., London, 1907) i, p. 475.

The letter from the Duke of Wellington [to Revd Mr Foster `his relation'] is an almost verbatim copy of MS 61 WP1/1241/4, 4 Dec 1832.
