The library of the Reverend John Bullar was presented to the Hartley Institution in April 1868. It contained many early works on theology, literature, philosophy and history and it is described in the printed catalogues of the library from the time, most extensively in Hartley Institution Southampton. The Library Catalogue Part II (Southampton, 1876) pp. 39-56. There was, in addition, a small quantity of manuscript material which has now been grouped to form MS 3.

This is in all probability the 'earlier work' referred to in The history and antiquity of Southampton with some conjectures concerning the Roman clausentum by John Speed MD ed. E.R.Aubrey (Southampton Record Society, 8; 1909) pp. xxxii-xxxiii. The volume was apparently presented to the Corporation of Southampton in 1759.
