Centre for Jewish Education

The Centre for Jewish Education (CJE) grew out of the teacher training department of Leo Baeck College, which expanded and eventually formed a separate education department serving both the Reform and Liberal movements.

Leo Baeck College had been launched through the initiative of Rabbi Werner Van der Zyl in September 1956 as the Jewish Theological College, and was renamed shortly afterwards following the death of Rabbi Dr Leo Baeck. In 1964 the College became jointly sponsored by the Reform Synagogues of Great Britain and the Union of Liberal and Progressive Synagogues. In 2001, the Centre for Jewish Education (CJE) integrated with the old Leo Baeck College to become Leo Baeck College - Centre for Jewish Education (LBC - CJE). A new Principal, Rabbi Professor Marc Saperstein, was appointed in 2006 and the combined new college adopted the name Leo Baeck College. The College continues to be sponsored by the Movement for Reform Judaism, the Liberal Movement and the United Jewish Israel Appeal.
