Thirty letters from Anthony Evelyn Melbourne Ashley (1836-1907), the second son of the seventh Earl of Shaftesbury and Lady Emily Cowper, to George Bentley, 1873-82, about the publication of his biography of Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston, in various editions (A.E.M.Ashley Life of Henry John Temple, Viscount Palmerston 1846-1865 (2 vols., 1876); Life and correspondence of Henry John Temple, Viscount Palmerston (2 vols., 1879) and a proposed five volume edition); together with one letter of Messrs R.Bentley, publishers, of 1889.  Ashley was private secretary to Lord Palmerston, 1858-65.
