MS 379/2  Letter from Earl Mountbatten of Burma, First Sea Lord, Admiralty, Whitehall, London, to first Viscount Montgomery of Alamein “Monty”, 20 October 1955, commenting on Montgomery’s statement on the deployment and integration of British armed forces:

“Although I admire you and your excellent record as a soldier, I do feel that generalisations by generals should never be made, and this is a case in point.”

MS 379/3  Papers of James O’Donald Mays, 1936-2008, relating to the Second World War, including:

a photograph album containing photographs of US Armed Forces in Southampton preparing for D-Day, 1944; scrapbook containing newspaper articles, mainly from the Southern and Dorset Daily Echos and the Daily Herald, concerning the city of Southampton as a port of embarkation, U.S. Army troops in Southampton preparing for D-Day, their eventual return to the United States and the transportation of war brides and children across the Atlantic, 1945-6; publications and handbooks issued by the United States Army Transportation Corps and Army Transportation Association which contain articles and photographs contributed to by Lieutenant James Mays: handbooks concern military transportation and Southampton as a port of embarkation, 1945-6; material concerning the transportation of Second World War warbrides from Britain to the USA, including three newsletters issued to the brides aboard the Queen Mary and a print of an illustration of that ship, 1946; newspaper articles and cuttings, including several articles covering the story of ex-mayor of Southampton, Rex Stranger, fulfilling a promise he made to Sgt Paul Shimer (the “millionth Yank” to embark from Southampton in October 1944) by visiting the USA after the war, 1974-94; souvenir newspapers, 1947-80; souvenir material for D-Day anniversary commemorations in Dorset and Hampshire, 1984, 1994; scrapbook of newspaper cuttings covering United States of American involvement in the 1936 Olympics in Germany, 1936; photographs of the United States Army Transportation Corps preparing for embarkation and demobilization in Southampton, and of Soviet prisoners of war being transported from Southampton, c.1940s; material relating to Israel, 1950s

The photographs belonged to Professor A.P.French who was a physicist working on the project

MS 379/6  Two letters, one hand written from Ernest Barker to Professor Arthur Bernard Cook, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge, the other a typed letter from Sir D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson, Professor of Natural History at the University of St Andrews, to Ernest Barker. The letters are dated July 1946 and relate to the idea that Aristotle might have been familiar with the concept of a pinhole camera.

The letter were found in a copy of Aristotelis opera in the Hartley Library
