Richard Cartwright talks about his inspiring journey
Senior Teaching Fellow, Richard Cartwright recently appeared in the business publication Economia, to discuss his inspiring professional journey following a life-changing accident ten years ago.
Richard recalled the incident, which happened 14 days after he secured his first graduate role at KPMG, leaving him paralysed from the neck down and facing a long road to recovery, “Ever since my accident the challenge has always been that red or blue pill moment from The Matrix,” he says. “Take the blue pill and just carry on as you are, or take the red one and see just how deep the rabbit hole goes. I like a challenge.” Refusing to be defeated by his disability, Richard returned to work at KPMG and with support from the Chartered Accountants’ Benevolent Association, was also able to resume study for his ACA.
Following the successful completion of his professional studies, Richard was given the opportunity to to run a course for the Department of Professional Practice and it was here that his love for teaching began.
Fast-forward to 2015 and Richard is now enjoying his role as a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton, sitting on the ICAEW council and playing a key role in the Solent Sharks wheelchair rugby club.
