Secrets of top leaders revealed at Southampton Business School seminar
Pioneers, philosophers and psychopaths - Clinical psychologist Dr Nick Maguire enthralled his audience in the latest in Southampton Business School's series of evening seminars by focusing on leadership and its relation to well-being.
Nick posed the questions - why do human beings in positions of power make strange decisions and can good leadership be taught, as well as outlining several relevant theories.
Nick, who is also Associate Professor within Psychology at the University of Southampton, described ‘Level Five’ leaders who choose the right behaviours to cope with challenging situations. Evidence suggests that good leaders display humility and drive in balance. Too much humility may lead to organisations losing the will to make difficult decisions, too much drive can result in self-serving behaviours from ‘heroic’ leaders who find it hard to inspire and motivate their staff.
Following his talk, audience members engaged in a lively discussion on leadership styles quoting examples from Steve Jobs, Alex Ferguson and Donald Trump.
