World-leading mathematician, Professor David Gabai to give CGTA distinguished Lecture 2024 Professor David Gabai, the Hughes-Rogers Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University, will give the annual Centre for Geometry, Topology and Applications (CGTA) distinguished lecture on Monday 10th June at 15:00.

Four-dimensional space(-time) is a basic building block of the theory of general relativity. Studying its geometry and topology has led to unprecedented advances and discoveries in mathematics in recent decades. Intriguingly, 4-dimensional Euclidean space is the only Euclidean space that can be smoothened in infinitely many distinct ways.

In this lecture, entitled Light bulbs, barbells and diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds, Professor David Gabai will describe some very concrete 4-dimensional constructions and show how they lead to results in smooth 4-dimensional topology.

Speaker information

Professor David Gabai, Hughes-Rogers Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University, Oswald Veblen Prize laureate, fellow of the American Mathematical Society, member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, invited speaker in the International Congress of Mathematicians
