Event details

With a great pleasure we will host Professor David Gabai (Princeton), speaking about "Light bulbs, barbells and diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds".

Title: Light bulbs, barbells and diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds

Abstract: We describe some very concrete 4-dimensional constructions and show how they lead to results in smooth 4-dimensional topology. In particular, we will describe the 4-dimensional light bulb theorem and a diffeomorphism of the 4-dimensional barbell. We apply the barbell map to construct knotted 3-balls in the 4-sphere and diffeomorphisms of hyperbolic 4-manifolds homotopic but not isotopic to the identity. Much of this is joint work with Ryan Budney.
