Athena SWAN

Chemistry at Southampton is fully committed to the Athena SWAN Charter that was established in 2005 and recognises a commitment to addressing gender inequalities. Our commitment to the Athena SWAN principles runs through all we do to improve career progression for our female academics in higher education and research in Southampton Chemistry. We aim to tackle an uneven representation of women in science and as a result achieve a significant increase in the number of women recruited to top posts.

We are very proud of our progress in ED&I. Chemistry received a Bronze Athena SWAN award in 2006. In 2015 Chemistry became the first department at the University of Southampton to receive a Silver Athena SWAN award. Following this Chemistry contributed significantly to the University Athena SWAN Silver award in 2016.

In November 2017 Southampton Chemistry was delighted to be awarded a Second Silver Athena SWAN award becoming the first department at the University of Southampton to achieve this status twice as recognition of our continued efforts to support career aspirations of female chemists.
