The University of Southampton

Early Career Community

Chemistry culture is welcoming, friendly and inclusive. The heart of the department is the coffee room/common room, which is open to all mornings (9.30-11.30) and afternoons (14.30-16.30). Taking a break and socialising here helps to integrate our community and its where a lot of networking occurs.

Chemistry Quiz Night

Chemistry at Southampton has a thriving community of postdoctoral researchers and our postdoc’s organise events to encourage co-workers to meet and discuss research, for example the postdoc forum, which is advertised to all by email prior to an event. Other recent events include a charity pubquiz held in the evening in the common room and attended by over 40 staff and postgrads

Chemistry newsletter

Chemistry has a Newsletter that is published twice a year (September and April) that celebrates many different aspects of life in the School of Chemistry, by sharing in this way we hope to benefit from the strong sense of community.

All Staff Meetings

Postdoctoral researchers are invited to our all staff meetings which are held approximately twice a year and are an opportunity to hear the latest updates and developments within chemistry. Postdoc’s are also welcome to join in many activities across the department including:

Equality, Diversion and Inclusion - contact Dr Lynda Brown (

Outreach - contact Prof David Read (
