New head of School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton

Professor Phil Gale is the new Head of the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

Phil has also recently been appointed Head of the new EPSRC-funded National Crystallography Service based at Southampton.

Having graduated from Wadham College Oxford with a BA in chemistry in 1992, Phil moved to Linacre College Oxford, graduating with a DPhil in inorganic chemistry in 1995. He spent two years at the University of Texas as a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow, returning to Oxford in 1997 as a Royal Society University Research Fellow.  

Phil joined Southampton in 1999 and was promoted to a personal chair in supramolecular chemistry in 2007.  His research interests are in the selective recognition, sensing and lipid bilayer transport of anionic species.  

He is the author or co-author of over 170 publications, including two books, and has won a number of research prizes including the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Corday-Morgan medal and prize.
