Postgraduate research student Bob De Caux, who is supervised jointly by Management and Electronics and Computer Science (ECS), is the team captain. Other members are David Bishop, a second year Physics student, and Matthew Loxham who is about to graduate with a PhD in respiratory toxicity.

Although the series was filmed between February and April 2013, teams have been sworn to secrecy about their progress so they cannot tell anyone at this stage how well they did. They passed initial auditions at Southampton to win places in the last 12, then went on to impress BBC judges who made the final decision on who should be in the team.

"The experience of sitting in the studio which we all knew so well was extremely surreal, but the best feeling we've ever had," says Richard. "I can now say I've fulfilled one of my great ambitions!"
