On July 21, 2021, the free Wing Chun online course organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton ended successfully.

This course was one of the series of Chinese martial arts culture courses held since last year. Professor Michael Ng from the University of Southampton’s school of Electronics and Computer Science was specially invited to teach the course. It began on 2 June 2021 and lasted for eight weeks, with one 45-minute class per week. Students attended via Zoom.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, many people have been working and studying at home for the long period of time since the beginning of 2020. Convenient and easy ways of exercising are important to overcome the monotony and boredom of working and studying at home and alleviate the distress and anxiety caused by the pandemic. Wing Chun, as a sports activity that doesn’t require any equipment, is a good choice for people exercising at home because of its flexibility and lack of time constraints. The free online Wing Chun course was launched once more following the positive response to the free online Taichi course offered by The Confucius Institute. It not only provides a social platform for people who are relatively isolated from the outside world due to the pandemic, but also spreads and shares an excellent example of traditional Chinese culture and promotes communication and interaction between Chinese and Western cultures. In view of the enthusiasm of the students, the Confucius Institute has tentatively decided to continue to offer tai Chi fan classes to local people in the autumn semester.
