An 8-week Southern Pole Kungfu course was successfully completed on 16 February 2024.

Southern Pole Kungfu is one of the Chinese martial arts courses sponsored by the Confucius Institute (CI) at the University of Southampton.

The course was co-organised by CI, the Chinese Association of Southampton (CAS), and the Chinese Students and Scholars Association.

The instructor, Dr Micheal Ng, is a professor at the School of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Southampton and the President of the Chinese Association of Southampton.

Pole is recognised as one of the four primary Kungfu implements, alongside the spear, sabre and strait sword.

The Southern Pole routine preserves and reflects the distinctive stylistic features of Southern-style weaponry. It has precise and standardised movements, together with a rigorous structure and a well-thought-out layout. Moreover, it emphasises the integration of footwork, stepping techniques and the fusion of offensive and defensive movements through the application of force.

CI has run a series of Kungfu courses collaborated with CAS. Since the courses have received very positive feedback from the participants, our next course, 14-week Southern Fist, will start recruiting learners soon.

All are welcome!
