Alexander Hamilton's Atlantic World

Published: 16 March 2016

On 16 March 2016, CIPCS, in collaboration with the Southampton Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies, hosted an evening of music and conversation on the subject of Alexander Hamilton’s Atlantic World. Taking their cue from selections from the hit Broadway show, ‘Hamilton: An American Musical,’ five scholars of the early American republic and the wider Atlantic world – Rachel Herrmann (Southampton), Christer Petley (Southampton), Tom Cutterham (New College, Oxford), Daniel Peart (Queen Mary University of London) and Adam Smith (UCL) - discussed Hamilton’s imperial Caribbean roots, the Native American policy of Philip Schuyler, the supposed transatlantic love affair between Hamilton and his sister-in-law, Angelica Schuyler Church, the scandalous context that allowed Hamilton to carry on a protracted affair with Maria Reynolds, and the ongoing battle between Jeffersonians and Hamiltonians from the eighteenth century to the present.
