Centre for Imperial and Postcolonial Studies

Jawaharlal Nehru, and Lord and Lady Mountbatten on the steps of Government House in Delhi, 1948

We specialise in the study of the global empires that have defined so much of the world for centuries, and which continue to profoundly shape it today.

Part of English, Film, History, Music

The Centre for Imperial and Postcolonial Studies is a research centre committed to exploring the varied ways that global empires functioned, were resisted and negotiated, and continue to define the present. Interdisciplinary in approach ever since its inception, the Centre brings together people from across the university in the study of issues concerning migration, power, violence, trade, race, and much more.
Through regular events – from talks to film screenings to workshops – we support cutting-edge research on these themes. We also seek to nurture the study of these areas at postgraduate level; every year, our well-attended conferences see PhD students from Southampton and beyond congregate to work on the interdisciplinary study of themes of pressing social importance.
