Event details
The Centre for Transnational Studies, in collaboration with the Centre for Imperial and Postcolonial Studies, is hosting its first event of the academic year - A Postgraduate and Early Career Masterclass.
This workshop explores the concept of ‘transnational feminism’ and how a transnational feminist approach can be applied to academic research.
Transnational feminist theory resists the concept of “global sisterhood” and instead posits that women’s experiences are differentiated by factors such as their ethnicity, class, religion and sexuality. Therefore, patriarchal oppression, and strategies for resisting it, must be understood within the specific cultural and social contexts in which women live. This workshop will position transnational feminist theory as a response to white western feminism, and second-wave feminism in particular. Dr. Maria Tomlinson will also present her doctoral research.
Maria’s project analysed contemporary women’s writing from France, Algeria, and Mauritius from a transnational feminist perspective. The workshop will also allow space for the discussion of key second-wave feminist and transnational feminist texts.
