Dr Babak Mahdavi Ardestani is Research Fellow within Social Sciences at the University of Southampton.

My research interests transcend traditional boundaries in the fields of computer science, engineering, geography and social sciences.

I am currently involved in the EPSRC Care Life Cycle project – a multidisciplinary project which brings together researchers from Social Sciences, Complexity Science, Operational Research and Management Science.

Prior to joining Southampton I embarked, as a Research Fellow, in the last two remaining years of another EPSRC Complexity Science project at the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD) in collaboration with researchers from Cranfield University. I performed in the research, design and development of a complex adaptive system framework for investigating various scenarios related to key aspects of the current UK electricity system network and the potential of the smart electricity grid in relation to broader energy policy.

My other experiences in multi and inter-disciplinary projects include the development of a Multidisciplinary Design Optimization framework project for Bombardier Aerospace.

I also have several years’ experience in the software development industry as well as teaching in tertiary institutions in Québec (Canada).

My PhD (supervised by David O’Sullivan and Peter Davis) involved investigating the complex dynamic of residential segregation in Auckland using a realistic hybrid agent-based, micro/geo-simulation model, whilst my MSc thesis (supervised by Monty Newborn and Benoît Ozell) focused on the research, design and development of a MDO framework.

I am member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group Simulation (SIGSIM) and the Association of American Geographers (AAG).

Research interests

My past and current research experiences and interests transcend traditional boundaries in the fields of computer science, engineering, geography and social sciences.

My current research interests include agent-based modelling, microsimulation, geosimulation, [geographically referenced] social simulation, empirical validation of models, complex [adaptive] systems, agent-based computational economics, policy-oriented modelling and spatial analysis.
