The University of Southampton is now entering the demolition phase of the South Stoneham tower and associated 1960's buildings.
Following a public consultation, demolition is due to begin at the start of 2022.
Keltbray, the University's appointed contractors have provided the following information about their proposed demolition methodology and protective measures they intend to use for the duration of the project.
Site security and protective measures
- Keltbray will ensure the site is secured with appropriate hoarding and will have security on site. Should you have any concerns please call Keltbray’s point of contact on 0344 477 9991 in the first instance. The University’s Security team are also contactable out of hours on 023 80593311.
- Site access and vehicle movement will be carefully managed and regular dialog with Environmental and Safety Officer will be maintained.
Project timeline and work schedule
- Removal of internal fixtures and fittings will begin before Christmas.
- Keltbray have advised that demolition work is due to start in January 2022 and will continue until mid 2022.
- Work is scheduled Monday to Friday 8am until 6pm. Site personnel may arrive on site from 7am. Saturday working will be kept to a minimum, however, when required, work will be between the hours of 9am and 1pm.
Demolition Methodology
- Keltbray will use small machines to remove sections of the floor, starting from the top of the building and working their way down.
- All material will be cleared via the lift shaft chute and will be appropriately disposed of.
- Any hazardous materials will be removed in accordance with current legislation and using best practice methods.
Traffic Movement
- Traffic will enter and leave the site through a managed access point on Wessex Lane. The points will be carefully managed by Keltbray via a traffic management plan agreed with the Local Council.
- Should any large machinery need to be moved to or from site they may be subject to Movement Orders managed by the local police force. In order to minimise disruption they are usually early morning or late evening, we expect this to be minimal.
- Site personnel will park on site or use public transport and will be instructed not to park in surrounding streets.
Noise, dust and vibration
- Keltbray will work closely with the local Environmental Health Officer to ensure all work will be within the required limits.
- The site will have monitoring equipment that will be observed, and alerts will be raised if any levels are exceeded.
- The scaffolding wrapping will be replaced with a material to reduce dust from works on the tower. Damping down techniques will be used to reduce dust on site.
