Research

Our research connects statisticians and demographers, economists and social policy analysts in Social Sciences with academics from across the University and beyond. We host the largest group of demographers in the UK, and we specialise in innovations in statistical methodology. We are known for the expertise and international scope of our researchers and for the application of cutting-edge quantitative and qualitative methods. Much of our work has global impact, aiding our partners in the development of policy worldwide.

We work in four main areas that inform policy, design, and practice: 

Demography - including Family Demography; Migration; Historical Demography; and the Voluntary Sector, Social Welfare and Inequality

Health and Well-being 

Sample Survey Theory and Methods

Statistical Modelling  

Our department directs several large research centres, including the Centre for Population Change, the National Centre for Research Methods, and the Centre for Global Health, Population, Poverty, & Policy.
