Understanding the experiences of Black and Asian postgraduate researchers

As part of Race Equality Week 2024, the University of Southampton’s Doctoral College has launched a new report into the experiences of our Black and Asian postgraduate research (PGR) students. In line with this year’s theme of #ListenActChange, the report seeks to better understand the under-representation of PGRs from racially minoritised backgrounds both at the university and across the sector.

This research has been completed in collaboration with the Doctoral College’s PGR Student Partners, Nandini Das and Lilian Odaro, and details recommendations for improving and enhancing the experiences of PGR students from racially minoritised backgrounds.

From listening and working with our students, we detail how we will act and change. We provide an overview of the steps we are taking to support the development of an inclusive research culture for our PGR students, and our plans to better diversify the UG-PG-PGR pipeline.
