Festival of Doctoral Research 2019

Three Minute Thesis Faculty Finalists 2019
Three Minute Thesis Faculty Finalists 2019

The Festival of Doctoral Research was held from Tuesday 7 May to Thursday 23 May 2019.

The annual Festival of Doctoral Research brings together our doctoral community to highlight their contribution and celebrate their impact, both on the University and on the outside world.

With a 25% increase of activities going on during the three week period, this festival was the largest ever with nearly 40 events, including old favourites such as the Three Minute Thesis competition and Bake your PhD, but also included sessions supporting PGRs in areas such as wellbeing with the Body-Mind Connection events, career workshops, as well as skills development through activities such as editing and producing a Journal in a Day.

As well as exciting and innovating activities from doctoral researchers through the Activities Fund awards, our four Festival interns (Aneesha, Clarissa, Ellen, and Phuong) worked tirelessly to help support the Doctoral College team, the events and even held their own activities, from Relaxation Technique Workshops, a celebration party at The Orange Rooms, a panel session on the ups and downs of the PhD Journey, and curating a PhD Power Tunes Playlist!

Take a look at a few highlights of the event below, including award winners!

Three Minute Thesis 2019

The 3MT Grand Final was held on Wednesday 15 May during the Festival of Doctoral Research. Six finalists, one from each Faculty (two from the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences) took to the stage in front of a packed lecture theatre to compete for the University title, and the opportunity to move further in the National Competition run by Vitae.

While the judges deliberated, and the People's Choice counted, the audience were treated to a mind-blowing talk from special guest, Dr Ben Littlefield, Head of Curiosity, Winchester Science Centre.
