Challenging university leaders

Professor Tony Kelly, head of the University of Southampton Education School, has urged universities to respect both their star researchers and their gifted teachers in an online article for The Guardian’s Learning and Teaching hub.

As senior staff across the higher education sector finalise their decisions on which research projects should be submitted for this autumn’s crucial Research Excellence Framework (REF), Professor Kelly counsels Vice-Chancellors to recognise the importance of good teaching in modern universities and allow both lecturers and researchers to achieve their potential by removing onerous administrative burdens.

He warns that rankings in the National Student Survey will be soon seen as second only to REF outcomes. Demographic change over the next few years means admissions tutors will be recruiting from a dwindling pool of bright young people who will have high expectations of their experience at university.
