Dr Christan Bokhove invited by BBC Solent to talk about teachers’ recruitment and retention
On 30th August Dr Bokhove joined Julian Clegg in the BBC Radio Solent studio to discuss the findings of 'The teacher labour market in England: subject expertise and incentives' report by the Education Policy Institute . The report found that Hampshire in particular is lacking in Mathematics and STEM subject teachers. Christian highlighted the challenges that schools face, both in terms of recruitment, but also the retention of teachers, citing bureaucracy, workload and pay as contributing factors among others. The main points are listed on the Mathematics, Science and Health Education Research Centre blog . Although the report highlights negative aspects to the current working climate for teachers, the report overall may be a positive step towards improvement as many in the teaching community believe that these issues were previously being ignored. Christian also discusses what skills are required to be a good mathematics teacher and how entry requirements add further pressure to recruitment.
