This course (in Burgess Hill) aims to help teachers identify the changes to the primary science curriculum from September 2014 with guidance on implementing the changes in their schools. The course is suitable for KS1 and KS2 Primary Teachers and Science Subject Leaders.
During the day teachers will have the opportunity to evaluate the alternative approaches when moving from the old to the new, to improve their background knowledge of the new aspects while sampling a host of practical ideas and activities to help with the teaching of these new areas whilst embedding the science in a creative curriculum.
Outcomes
- Identify changes to the national curriculum for primary science and plan for the changes needed in a creative curriculum plan
- Understand the background knowledge for the new aspects of the curriculum and know a variety of ideas and activities to use with children that can be delivered adopting a creative approach
- Describe the difference between “scientific enquiry” and “working scientifically” and have ideas to help bring about any necessary changes in creative contexts
Teachers will leave with the ‘Planning primary science in the curriculum 2014 using a creative approach’ pack produced by Primarily Science designed to save hours of work for busy science subject leaders -This can be freely adapted to suit the needs of individual schools.

Speaker information
Debbie Eccles,Primarily Science,During her teaching career Debbie has held a number of roles including Science Coordinator and Acting Head. Following this she held Local Authority Primary Science Advisory roles in two local authorities. She has contributed to a range of innovative and well received resources, including being involved in the creation of the KS1 enquiry 'Discovery Dog' materials and 'Problem Pup' for children in the foundation stage. Debbie is a member of the North West ASE committee and regularly presents at both regional and national ASE conferences. She is an active member of NAIGS (National Advisers and Inspectors Group for Science) and helped to develop and deliver the primary science programme for the network of Science Learning Centres. She is now an independent consultant working in a partnership known as 'Primarily Science'. She is kept busy producing new primary science resources, providing consultancy, and delivering science courses, school based INSET and conference sessions locally, regionally and nationally.
