Formative and summative assessment of phonics
Workshop leader: Moira Groves
Moira is Head of School, EY and KS1, at Harrison Primary School and a very experienced English leader and consultant, working at both local and national level.
The workshop will explore how formative and summative assessment strategies can be used to support and monitor children’s development in phonics. Included in the session is a summary of the Year 1 phonics screening check.
Teaching phonics in the early years and engaging parents.
Workshop leader: Jen Squires
Jen is the Early Years leader at Holy Family Catholic Primary School, part of the Bitterne and Sinclair partnership. She is an experienced, outstanding YR teacher and EYFS moderator.
Immerse yourself in an EYFS phonics session and explore how each stage (revisit and review, teach, practise, apply and assess) can involve parents. Alongside this we will consider a range of tools to engage parents including workshops, home-learning, child-parent teaching opportunities and parent friendly resources.

Workshop leader: Jess Reed
Jess teaches Year 1 at St Monica Primary School and leads English and Phonics. She is part of the English Curriculum Group for the Portswood Teaching School Alliance.
This workshop will look at planning for all abilities and consider how to differentiate for your learners. It will include guidance on how to organise your learning environment to support learners and links to the new National Curriculum.
Bridging the gap between phonics interventions and the classroom
Workshop leaders: Isabel Hislop and Claire Westlake
As Early Years leader and English subject leader respectively, Isabel and Claire have worked at Mansel Park Primary to develop effective phonics teaching that has impact throughout the school.
The workshop will look at how we can create a phonics friendly classroom for inclusive practice in KS2. We will consider how we can ensure that children apply points learned through phonics and spelling interventions back in the classroom.
Practical ideas and resources to support reading and writing within phases 2 and 3
Workshop leader: Jenni Gibson
Jenni is an Early Years Lead Practitioner for the Portswood Teaching School Alliance.
This session will give you practical ideas and resources to support reading and writing within phases 2 and 3. There will be a range of activities to support the early development of reading and engaging children to write.
Phases 5 and 6 – beyond the basic sounds
Workshop leaders: Roisin Philip and Amy Warbey
Roisin and Amy are both Year 2 teachers – Roisin at Shirley Infants and Amy at St Mary’s Primary. They both work as SLEs across the city.
This workshop will look at how to plan and resource for engaging learning and clear progression at phases 5 and 6. Additionally it will look at how to support the application of phonic skills into pupils’ reading and writing.
Ensuring progress for LA learners in phonics
Workshop leader: Daniel Mee
Daniel teaches Year 1 at Portway Infants in Andover. For the last two years he has taken responsibility for the lowest attainers in the year group with very successful results.
The session will look at a range of activities and strategies that Daniel uses to increase the engagement of these children in phonics, often through making activities more multi-sensory.
Life after phonics
Workshop leader: Stephanie Mander
Stephanie is a Year 6 class teacher and the English leader at Foxhills Junior School. She is a Lead Expert and Lead Practitioner for the Portswood Teaching School Alliance.
The workshop will look at a new approach to spelling, weaving it in with reading and writing for impact. It will consider planning for spelling, including making it contextual.
