Many psychology teachers are not trained specifically in psychology teaching and many come to psychology having taught other subjects. The aim of this course is to introduce new teachers to some of the challenges of teaching psychology for the first time. We will discuss both the history and philosophy of teaching psychology A-level and a range of practical issues, including interpreting and following a specification, choosing and developing resources and using learning technology. You will also have the chance to discuss your continuing professional development and establish a support network. This 1 day course is suitable for all teachers of psychology in schools & colleges.
Learning outcomes
All participants will:
- Understand the history of psychology in schools and colleges and to critically discuss the development of the current psychology curriculum
- See and have the chance to compare and critically discuss current A-level and GCSE specifications and know about other psychology courses
- Better understand the assessment of psychology at GCSE and A-level
- Know some examples of classic topics in psychology and how they can be taught and assessed
- Become more familiar with teaching resources including text books and online materials
- Understand some of the opportunities for psychology teaching afforded by technology
- Plan your career direction as a psychology teacher and establish a peer support network

- Discussion of the current psychology curriculum
- Comparison of alternative specifications
- Ofqual assessment criteria and how they translate into assessment
- Marking exercises
- Masterclass in teaching classic topics
- Showcase of current text books and some online support materials
- Demos of some technological tools to enhance the teaching and learning of psychology
- Career planning and support networks
