Bourdieu, Reflexivity and Method Seminar
Event details
This talk will address Bourdieu’s ‘theory of practice’ as related to educational research and the role of reflexivity within it. The background to his method and the salient aspects of it will also be considered. Professor Michael Grenfell will quote examples from a range of educational studies, including his own. Since reflexivity is a popular aspect of educational research practice, the aim is to explore the extent to which his is a ‘reflexive’ approach, and how it contrasts with others within the field.
The key message of the talk is that Bourdieu has been rather misused and there is a better way of adopting his approach.
Professor Michael Grenfell aims to shed some light on Bourdieusian practice for those who are interested in using his approach, and possibly get others to reconsider their own research projects in terms of his method and what he understood by reflexivity. The relevant paper and slides will be posted on Sharepoint in support of the seminar.
