The research in this area is concerned with enhancing the effectiveness of leaders and managers within all phases of education, across phases (such as 14-19 education) and with a strongly international perspective. Diversity in leadership is also a specific interest.

Leadership, diversity and inclusion of both staff and learners is a primary research focus. Recent projects include investigating the impact of the Scottish Standards for Leadership and Management: supporting leadership and management development, and in particular, the standards for social justice, as part of the European Policy Network on School Leadership; a literature review of leadership in higher education for the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, and supporting research into the governance of further education colleges and academies. Previous research includes establishing a national baseline of evidence for secondary education and a number of projects concerned with leadership and diversity. Professor Lumby has also edited an international handbook on leadership development on behalf of the national professional organisations of North America, the UK and the Commonwealth.

Research in Educational Leadership, Management and Administration is led by Professor Jacky Lumby. The research area comes under the Centre for Leadership, School Improvement and Effectiveness (LSIE).
